Our approach
Four stages. Not four invoices.
Discover, Protect, Apply, and Optimize describe how we think about AI adoption — not a fixed program every client buys. Most engagements draw heavily on one or two stages and touch the others lightly.
The model
Discover. Protect. Apply. Optimize.
Select a stage to see the question it answers and the activities it can involve.
Where can AI actually create value?
We start by understanding the business — how work moves through it, where time is lost, what technology is already in place, and what leadership is trying to accomplish. Only then do we look at where AI fits.
Some engagements begin and end here, with a prioritized list of opportunities and a clear recommendation.
Possible activities
- Executive discovery
- AI readiness assessment
- Workflow discovery
- Employee interviews and surveys
- AI tool inventory
- Use-case identification
- Opportunity prioritization
- ROI and business-case development
Clients do not need every stage at the same depth. We scope the work to the situation.
Why the depth varies
Two very different companies,
both adopting AI successfully.
Example
A 20-person professional-services company may need secure AI accounts, an acceptable-use policy, employee training, and two useful automations.
Example
A regulated financial-services company deploying AI agents against proprietary data may require formal governance, application controls, security architecture, vendor assessments, monitoring, testing, and ongoing advisory.
Both are successful AI adoption. Neither is a smaller version of the other.
What we scope against
In practice
What an engagement
tends to look like.
Three common shapes. Yours will resemble one of them more than the others.

These are illustrative patterns rather than packages. We determine the actual emphasis during discovery, and we will tell you if a stage is not worth your investment right now.
Common questions
How the method works in practice
What are the four stages of the VIP IT AI approach?
The four stages are Discover, Protect, Apply, and Optimize. Discover establishes where AI can create value in the business. Protect puts governance and security in place before tools are adopted broadly. Apply builds and deploys the solutions. Optimize measures results and expands what works. Stages can overlap, and organizations that already have policy or clear priorities may skip parts of the sequence.
Do we have to complete every stage?
No. The model is a sequence of concerns rather than a mandatory program. An organization with sound governance already in place can move directly to applied work, and one that only needs a policy can stop after Protect. VIP IT AI states which stages an organization can reasonably skip instead of selling the full sequence by default.
Where should an organization start with AI?
Most organizations should start by identifying which specific tasks consume disproportionate staff time, then check whether any of them are good automation candidates. That is more productive than beginning with tool selection. If AI tools are already in informal use, the first step is usually a basic acceptable-use policy and a short list of approved tools.

Where would you want
to start?
A short conversation is usually enough to identify which stage matters most for your organization right now.
